Children’s Jewelry
In many cultures children are adorned with jewelry – both for beauty and symbolically. In Western cultures, babies (both girls and boys), are often gifted with bracelets.
These are often Christening or Naming gifts. Girls, particularly are given earrings necklaces and bracelets and both sexes are seen to be wearing anklets, some that are silver plated with pearls. Some baby jewelry is not worn by the infant but hung on their crib or cot, for example, Angel pins or medals.
As children grow, their interest in jewelry changes. It’s hard to work out why little girls are attracted to sparkling diamonds. Is it because they watch their mother and other girls? Some go for the Princess look, wearing pretty charm bracelets, expensive or otherwise.
Teenagers, on the other hand have more distinctive tastes including piercings for some and mixtures of bracelets, necklaces and anklets. It is at this time that girls and boys decide what their style is and this is often their style until their mid-twenties or for always. this jewelry is funky, hip and stylish. You can imagine that makers of jewelry have a field day catering for this group!
Teenagers make a statement with their jewelry. I have spoken to many parents who have just had to come to terms with what their son or daughter is wearing. Sometimes it is heavy chains, huge rings. The colours and the shapes and designs are often ‘different’ and some would label rebellious. They like to experiment with their jewelry. This does not mean that they are rubbish. They often have gold and silver and crystal jewelry. With the internet so handy when buying things, teenagers can purchase their own – which is also part of the independent statement they make with what they wear!
Jewelry gifts are often quite perfectly matched to the young woman as she graduates from school or college.
There are still many cultures in the world where children and teenagers wear both colourful and resplendent jewelry which is both meaningful and also worn to mark particular transitions in their lives.
Whether it’s cheap trinkets or expensive bracelets or the gothic look or chunky and junky, young people just want to be seen in their particular style. As adults we honour their right to decorate the way they wish.
